The Subtle Falling Away: When Churches Trade Grace for Works

In these last days, we are witnessing a quiet but devastating shift in many churches — a falling away not marked by loud rebellion, but by subtle compromise. The Apostle Paul warned of this:

“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first…”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (KJV)

The Subtle Lie: Working for Salvation

One of the most dangerous teachings creeping into pulpits today is the idea that salvation must be earned — that grace alone is not enough. This doctrine contradicts the very heart of the Gospel:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

— Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)

When churches begin to preach performance over grace, they shift the focus from Christ’s finished work to man’s effort. This is not the Gospel. It is bondage.

The Rejection of Scripture: Twisting Truth

Even more troubling is the rise of pastors who openly reject the literal truth of Scripture — especially regarding sin. Some now preach that homosexuality is not sin, despite the clear words of the Bible:

“Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.”
— Leviticus 18:22 (KJV)

“Men with men working that which is unseemly…”
— Romans 1:27 (KJV)

This is not a matter of opinion or cultural relevance. It is a matter of obedience to God’s Word. When pastors twist Scripture to fit modern ideologies, they are not shepherds — they are deceivers.

We Are All Sinners — But Let’s Not Justify It

Let me be clear: I am a sinner. I fall short daily. But if you call me out on it, I will not defend my sin. I will not tell you it’s okay. I will repent.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
— Romans 3:23 (KJV)

The difference is this: I do not try to rewrite the Bible to make my sin acceptable. I submit to it. I let it convict me. I let it change me.

Hold Fast to the Word

Now more than ever, we must hold fast to the truth of Scripture. Not watered down. Not reinterpreted. Not made palatable for the masses.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
— Psalm 119:105 (KJV)

Let us speak the truth in love, but let us speak it boldly. The Gospel is not ours to edit. It is ours to proclaim.
